WHAT YOU ARE WALKING INTO.

THE STANDARD

Belts here are graded to the Kukkiwon standard, the World Taekwondo headquarters in Seoul. A black belt earned on this mat is a black belt anywhere in the world. Children start at five; the ladder runs white, yellow, green, blue, red, black, with the stripes in between earned one at a time.

WHO IT IS FOR

Children 5 to 12 learn to stand still, to bow, to kick with the whole body and to hear a correction without flinching. Teens and adults get the full art: poomsae, sparring, breaking, and the conditioning that makes a kick land.

THE TEAM

The Phoenix team competes across New York and the East Coast. Nobody is pushed onto the team. Anyone who earns a place is told so by the master.

Questions

Is Taekwondo good for a five-year-old?

Yes. The children’s class is built for ages five to twelve: short drills, clear commands, a lot of movement, and a belt ladder that gives a child something to earn every few months.

Do adults start as beginners?

Every adult starts white. The first fourteen days are the same for everyone; at the end the master places you by what he saw.

Is this Olympic Taekwondo?

It is Kukkiwon Taekwondo, the system behind World Taekwondo and the Olympic sport. Sparring is taught with full protective gear.
